Pick a Workout Routine and Stick to it

One of the reasons why new lifters don’t see the success they’d hoped for is due to a lack of consistency. Being new, they are eager for information. When they hear something interesting, they’re all fired up to try it out. This experimental phase is important as a new lifter learns how his or her body works, but sooner or later success becomes more about steady and regular effort.

You often see lifters switching from one plan to another. In the end, this can be a bad thing. Weight training, like most things in life, is all about momentum. Most people never realize the benefits of momentum. They continually start and stop and start and stop, then wonder why they don’t see results.

One great training session, or one great nutrition day, will not create success. This is true in most things, not just in weight training. Success comes from stringing great days together. Your goal should be to turn a great day into a great week, then a great month, then a series of great months. Once you do that, you’ll have behind you the power of momentum. The more great days you have, the easier it becomes to have even more great days.

Give your weight training routine time to work. Stick to the plan long enough to see results, but keep in mind that results don’t always come as quickly as we’d like.

Don’t make the mistake of bouncing from one program to the next without giving any one of them a real, concentrated effort. Try the program for three months – that should be long enough to evaluate whether or not it’s working for you. Even if you hear about another interesting program, resist the urge to switch until you’ve run your three month course.

Always remember that the way you eat has a tremendous effect on your results. Stick to your nutritional plan with the same fortitude you use to stick to your workout.

Most things in life, weight training included, are marathons, not sprints. You will see your best results from steady, consistent and regular effort. Make a plan, stick to it, a reap the rewards!
