Take a Break From Exercise
Serious lifters can be compulsive about their exercise and diet. They will train for months on end without ever taking a break from lifting. An unfortunate potential side affect of this extended training can be an unnoticed loss of enthusiasm. Training intensity can start to slide over time, even if you don’t realize it.
The solution is to take a week long break every now and then. Schedule time out of the gym to give your muscles time to fully recover. A good guideline to follow is to take a full week off every 8 – 10 weeks of training. This time off out of the gym will allow you body to recuperate, and when you return to the gym after these breaks, it will be with newfound energy and enthusiasm.
The feeling that you lost ground when you return will go away soon enough when you see that your strength didn’t decrease at all, and might have actually gone up. Although it seems counter intuitive, a good break will shake things up just enough to help you break through a barrier or two and keep you moving forward.
So enjoy your week off. You trained hard, you deserve it!
